Day Two

Thursday
The roads and streets here in Port au Prince are much worse even than those in Kabul, although there is not as much traffic, the drivers are much more courteous, and the air is better. Only major through streets are paved, and because it is so hilly here, there is much erosion in the streets, which now appear to consist mostly of large rocks with the occasional patch of hard-packed clay.

Gene's car succumbed recently to some hard-use-related ailment and is in the repair shop, so we packed our backpacks this morning and hiked up the mountain about 3 miles to the IT office where we spent the day working. During the day it is unrelentingly hot at these lower elevations, but with a fan blowing on us, it was tolerable. At the end of the day, we were fortunate enough to get a ride part of the way back.

The main street between Gene's house and the guest house where I stay. It is very rough, there is only one street light in 4 blocks, and there is no sidewalk, but the bougainvillea is beautiful.
